You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. (2 Tim. 2:3-4).
For when no one exercises in the wrestling school, how shall he [or she] win and be distinguished in the contests and fights? What champion, not being used to training, will be able, when summoned by the Olympic contests, to show anything great and noble against his opponent? Ought we not every day to wrestle and fight and run? Do you not see what those who do not have an opponent do, how they fill a bag with much sand, and hang it up to try their strength upon it and beat it? These people we should emulate and practice the wrestlings of self-denial. For indeed, there are many that provoke to anger, and incite to lust, and kindle a great flame. Stand, therefore, against your passions, bear nobly the mental pangs that you may also endure those of the body. – St. John Chrysostom
So He answered and said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” (Luke 10:27).
Abba John the Short said, “A house is not built by beginning at the top and working down. You must begin with the foundations in order to reach the top.” They said to him, “What does this saying mean?” He said, “The foundation is our neighbor, whom we must win, and that is the place to begin. For all the commandments of Christ depend on this alone.”
