Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick (Luke 5:31).
Our Instructor, the Word, therefore, is He who heals the unnatural passions of our soul with His counsel and exhortations. The art of healing, strictly speaking, is the relief of the ills of the body, an art learned through human wisdom. Yet, the Word of the Father is the only true divine Healer of human sickness, the holy Comforter of the soul when it is sick. Scripture says, “Save, Your servant, O my God, who puts his trust in You. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I will cry to You all day.” According to Democritus, “For while the physician’s art heals the diseases of the body, it is Wisdom that frees the soul from passions.” But the Good Instructor, the Wisdom, the Word of the Father, who made man, cares for the whole person of His creature; the all-sufficient Physician of humanity, the Savior, heals both body and soul. He heals the body: “Rise up,” He said to the paralytic; “take up your bed and go home,” and to the dead, He said, “Lazarus, come forth,” and the dead man came from his coffin in the way before he had died, having undergone resurrection. He also heals the soul itself by commands and gifts — by commands given in the course of time, but being liberal in His gifts, He says to us sinners, “Your sins are forgiven.” – St. Clement of Alexandria
