Blessed Fast of St. Mary
“Many people, when they see any of those who are pleasing to God suffering anything terrible, as for example, having fallen into sickness or poverty, are offended, not knowing that to those especially dear to God it belongs to endure these things; since Lazarus also was one of the friends of Christ, and was sick…. But God allowed that this should happen so that we should never be troubled if any sickness or hardship should happen to those who are so dear to God. ” – St. John Chrysostom
Let us imitate the example of the godly Mary [Magdalene], that we may offer love and worship to Him. In place of her myrrh, let us store up good deeds and works. In place of her hospitality, let us care and provide for our brothers [and sisters]. The Lord, the Lover of Mankind, is well-pleased to apply to Himself every good deed done for our brothers and to consider Himself the beneficiary, and to bestow His rich gifts on the benefactors in return. “Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you, do not turn away.” Let us seize the opportunity while we have time to do good. Do not say that we lack the opportunity that Mary [Magdalene] had because we shall always have the poor amongst us, and we know that “He who pities the poor lends to the Lord, and He will pay back what he has given.” – St. Nektarios
