Blessed Fast of the Apostles
To love friends is custom for all people, but to love enemies is customary only for Christians” – Tertulian
St. Paul the Apostle says, “I have crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” How deep is the phrase, “It is no longer I”? The one who is able to say this phrase is the one who has entered through the narrow gate and difficult path, the one who has trained him [or herself] to disappear so that the Lord and other people may appear. The one who is humble says, “It is no longer I.” This person aspires to be last, to be a servant of all, and to take the last place, as St. Paul says, “In honor giving preference to one another.” “It is no longer I” is said by the meek and humble person, for the person is convinced that they are nothing… “It is no longer I” is said by the one who is not wise in his [or her] own opinion but blames themselves to justify other people, bearing the sins of others that they may be innocent and he [or she] be guilty. In the depth of his or her love, they redeem all just as Christ did. – Pope Shenouda
