Blessed Lent
The sea is roaring and the tempest is great, and so nothing else remains but for you to cry out, “Lord, I perish.” Let Him stretch out His hand, whom the waves fear, let Him relieve your dread, let Him confirm your security, let Him speak within you, and say to you, “Hear what I have suffered for You.” Are you perhaps suffering…What have I not suffered?… Perhaps, like the disciples, your ship is being troubled because He is sleeping in you. The sea was raging, and the ship was being tossed, but Christ was sleeping in the boat. Finally, the disciples realized that among them was sleeping the Ruler and Creator of winds; they drew near and awoke Christ. He commanded the winds, and there was a great calm. Perhaps your heart is troubled because you have forgotten Him in whom you believe. Perhaps you are suffering because it has not come into your mind what Christ has suffered for your sake. Awake Christ, recall faith. Remember the sufferings of Christ for you. When you remember what He has suffered, will not you, too, endure equally with Him? And perhaps even rejoice because you have been found in some likeness of the sufferings of your King. When, therefore, on thinking about these things, you have begun to be comforted and to rejoice, He has awakened, He has arisen, He has commanded the winds; therefore, there is a great calm. – St. Augustine
