A palm appears rough at the bottom, but at the top it displays its beauty and the sweetness of its fruit. For this reason, it is rightly compared to the stature of any faithful soul that endures rough labors for the Lord on earth below but hopes to receive a most gracious reward from the Lord in heaven. The palm is rough near the ground because the elect suffers persecution for the sake of justice. Likewise, the palm is clothed with long-lasting leaves and does not shed its leaves. This is compared to the faithful who, amid the changing conditions of this passing age, always retains the same righteous works and words of a right confession. Like leaves that never fall, is he [or she] who keeps the same perfection of works that he began from the start. – Venerable Bede
