A Blessed Feast of Theophany
I see many after their baptism living more carelessly than the unbaptized, and having nothing peculiar to distinguish them in their way of life. It is, you see, for this cause, that neither in the market nor in the Church is it possible to know quickly who is a believer and who an unbeliever unless one is present at the time of the Mysteries. Yet Christians ought to be distinguished not by their place, but by their way of life. The believer ought to be the light and salt of the world. – St. John Chrysostom
The gospel says of the regenerate [baptized] that “He gave all those who received Him the power to become His children.” Now the child born of someone certainly shares his [or her] parent’s nature. If, then, you have received God and become His child, let your way of life testify to the God within you. Make it clear who your Father is! The marks by which we recognize God are the very same ones by which a son [or daughter] of His must show his [or her] relation to Him: “He opens His hands and fills every living thing with joy,” “He overlooks iniquity,” “He relents of evil,” “The Lord is kind to all and is not angry with us every day,” “God is upright and there is no unrighteousness in Him”—and the similar sayings scattered through Scripture for our instruction. If you are like this, you have genuinely become a child of God. But if you persist in displaying the marks of evil, it is useless to babble to yourself about your birth from above [baptism]. – St. Gregory of Nyssa
