“And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered…Joseph also went up from Galilee… to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child” (Luke 2:1-5)

“Let us not pass over the very great condescension of our Master and Redeemer, who not only willed to become incarnate for us but also willed to become incarnate at a time when soon after His birth He would be inscribed in the report of a census. For He put on flesh so that He might put on us the strength of the Spirit; He descended from heaven to earth so that He might elevate us from earth to heaven; He paid tribute to Caesar so that He might grant us the grace of perpetual freedom. The Son of God in the form of a human did service to a king who was ignorant of this divine servitude so that in this way Christ might also bestow on us a model of humility, suggesting how greatly we ought to serve each other through charity since He Himself did not disdain to commit Himself to servitude to one who was unware of true charity.” – Bede the Venerable
