Blessed Start of St. Mary’s Fast

“But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Lk. 2:19). The Virgin Mother diligently held in her heart everything that she had come to know about the Lord, whether from the Lord’s sayings or from His deeds, and she assiduously committed them all to memory so that, when the time should come for preaching about the Lord or for writing about His incarnation, she would be sufficiently able to tell inquirers about everything just as it had happened. Let us also, my brothers and sisters, imitate the devout mother of the Lord, and by keeping all the words and deeds of the Lord and Savior fixed in our heart through mediation on them day and night, let us drive away the troublesome attacks of useless and noxious thoughts. Through frequent discussion of them, let us take care to restrain both ourselves and our neighbors from unnecessary talk and from conversations sweetened with the evil of slander and to arouse ourselves for the frequent celebration of divine praise. – The Venerable Bede
