Blessed Feast of St. Verena
“Sell what you have and give alms; provide yourselves money bags which do not grow old, a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches nor moth destroys” (Lk. 12:33). God does not want you to lose your wealth, but He has given you counsel to change the place of it. Suppose your friend were just now to enter your house, and find that you had placed your store of grain in a damp place, and he knew the natural proneness of grain to decay, which you did not know about, and so he gives you this advise, saying, ‘Brother, you are losing what with great toil you have gathered since you have placed it in a damp place, and so in a few days this grain will decay.’ ‘And what am I to do, brother?’ ‘Raise it into a higher place.’ You listen to your friend’s suggestion that you should raise grain from a lower to a higher chamber, and do you not listen to Christ’s charge to lift up your treasure from earth to heaven?” – St. Augustine
“It is interesting that when it is necessary to spend money anywhere other than church, no one complains of their poverty. Even if a person is smitten with poverty, he even borrows money to accomplish the desire. Yet, if we mention almsgiving, they allege to us children, and wife, and home, and care of the household as excuses—and other pretexts too numerous to list. The greatest pleasure and benefits come from giving to the poor….For Scripture says, “The fruit of the spirit is: charity, joy, peace…” – St. John Chrysostom

Featured Saint of the Week: St. Verena
St. Verena came from a noble Christian family in the ancient city of Thebes, corresponding to present day Luxor in Egypt. She was a close relative of St. Maurice, the general of the Theban legion. The soldier’s relatives were allowed to accompany them on their missions to attend to the wounded. St. Verena joined the Theban legion on its mission to Switzerland. After St. Maurice and his legion were martyred, she practiced an ascetic life of solitude, fasting and prayer, and God performed many miracles through her. The saint served as a spiritual guide for young girls. Since she was a nurse, she also looked after their physical well-being. As a result of her fame, the current pagan ruler arrested her and sent her to jail, where St. Maurice appeared to her to console and strengthen her. After she was released from prison, she traveled to several regions. God continued to perform miracles through her. She also led many people to the Christian faith. St. Verena was also fond of serving the poor, often by feeding them. She tended the sick, especially those suffering from leprosy. She lovingly treated their wounds and was fearless of contracting their contagious disease. At the time of her departure, the Holy Virgin Mary appeared to her to strengthen her. She departed this life and went to live with the Lord on the 4th day of the Coptic month of Thout (September 14th).
