A Blessed Pentecost and Start of the Apostles’ Fast

“When He, the Holy Spirit, found the persecutor Paul repenting, He produced the Apostle to the gentiles, the preacher of the faith. Through Him the weak are strengthened, the poor enriched, those unskilled in speech are made wiser than the wise. St. Paul was weak, but through the presence of the Spirit, the handkerchiefs that had touched his body healed those who received them. St. Peter too was beset by bodily weakness, but through the indwelling of the Spirit, the shadow his body cast expelled the sicknesses of the infirm. St. John knew nothing of the wisdom of the world, but in the power of the Spirit, he uttered words which no wisdom can comprehend. The Spirit remains in heaven and fills the earth. He is everywhere present and fills all things. Let us pray that the Spirit be present to our souls and never abandon us.” – St. Basil the Great

“Now if the twelve apostles leavened the whole world, how is it that we, being so many, are not able to amend them who remain? We, who ought to be enough for ten thousand worlds, should become leaven to all. “But they,” one may say, “were apostles.”  So what? “But they had signs,” it will be said. It was not the signs that made them admirable. What then was it that made them so effective? Their contempt of wealth, their despising glory, their freedom from worldly things. Though they had raised ten thousand dead but had been slaves of their passions, they would not have converted people. Thus it is their life, so bright on all sides, which draws down the grace of the Spirit.” – St. John Chrysostom
